Beginnings of Geodesign: a personal historical perspective

    Get PDF
Geodesign is conceived as an iterative design method that uses stakeholder input, geospatial modeling, impact simulations, and real-time feedback to facilitate holistic designs and smart decisions. This paper aims to lay bare the beginnings of geodesign as such from 1965 onwards. It offers a personal historical perspective of Carl Steinitz, one of the protagonists in the field of geodesign. The paper describes some important milestones and influential people in a joint effort to bridge geo-information technology, spatial design and planning. It showcases the ongoing effort to employ the potential power of using GIS to link different model types and ways of designing to make better plans

In this essay, the author pays homage to the big masters of landscape architecture, so underlining how important in design is the influence of former ideas. He makes a brief look that touches about thirty figuress and for each one he proposes one idea, the one he regards as more original and innovative, the one that has more influence on landscape planning, therefore the one that changes that figure in a master. He ends off with some recent projects as an example of how these important planning ideas it’s been hand on and of the actual state of art

Teaching Scenario-Based Planning for Sustainable Landscape Development: An Evaluation of Learning Effects in the Cagliari Studio Workshop

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the contributions of an intensive educational workshop to advance students’ understanding and skills for collaborative, scenario-based landscape planning. The research design involves a case study workshop with thirty international students and several regional experts as well as a multi-stage, in-process evaluation. The workshop resulted in six different alternative futures for the region of Cagliari, Italy, and a seventh combined version that was considered best by regional reviewers. The students’ learning evaluation showed substantial advances in their relevant understanding and skills. Key aspects of the workshop pedagogy and the evaluation are discussed, and recommendations for future applications presented.Studienstiftung des Deutschen VolkesDAADDF

Collaboration in Planning: the Geodesign approach

    Get PDF
After proposing Geodesign as a novel approach to spatial planning and design, the paper presents the workflow and the results of a collaborative Geodesign workshop held in May 2016 to design the future development plan of the Cagliari Metropolitan Area in Italy. The workshop results demonstrate how it is possible to involve teams of members of the community in what is perhaps the most critical (and least understood in its dynamics) phase of a spatial planning process, that is putting knowledge into action through the design of future change alternatives. The participatory creation of design alternative is explained with reference to the case study, as well as the negotiation process which through impact assessment converges towards consensus on a final design solution

In December 2017 Prof. Carl Steinitz visited Brazil, with the support of IEAT/UFMG – Institute of Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies, Federal University of Minas Gerais - to the International Visitor Chairs Program. At that time, he coordinated important meetings with the students, professors and researchers, highlighting the participation in “Geodesign South America 2017”. As part of his activities in Brazil, an interview was registered, and can be watched on youtube channel of Geoprocessing Laboratory from the School of Architecture, Federal University of Minas Gerais: https://youtu.be/2VVm-64YukYWe invited the Architect Rafael Lemieszek Pinheiro, representing the group of PhD candidates, to conduct the interview.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.21.2018.a</p
